Omsk State Medical Academy

The Omsk State Medical Academy (before 1993 - the Omsk Medical Institute) was founded in 1921. At present more than 3000 students are taught at four faculties of the Academy: medical, pediatric, medico-prophylactic and stomatological.

Since it's foundation over 30 thousand physicians have been trained by the Academy. The qraduates of the Academy work in all regions of Russia and in the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), more than 139 having become Professors and more than 800 - Candidates of Medical Sciences.

Annually more than 1000 physicians of 18 specialities improve their professional skills at postexperience doctor's training department, in postgraduate clinical courses and internship.

Teaching is provided by 59 departments with the staff of 486 lecturers. Among the latter 63 are Doctors of Medial Sciences, Professors; and 300 are Candidates of Medical Sciences.

The most outstanding scientists of the Academy have been elected Full Members (L.V.Poluektov, V.P.Bisjarina), and Corresponding Members (A.S.Zinovjev) of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences; Corresponding Members of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (V.V.Dolmatov, S.G.Retznikov) and Corresponding Members of International Academy of Sciences of Higher School (Ju.V.Redjkin). V.P.Bisjarina, N.A.Zhukov, N.V.Mishenjkin, G.A.Kiselev have been elected by Academic Council the Honoured Professors for their great achievments in doctors' training and contribution in scientific research.

The students of the Academy gain practical experience in large medico-prophylactic institutions provided with modern facilities.

The main trends of Academy's research are complex subjects of pathogenesis and pathogenetical therapy of postresuscitation disease; construction and clinical approbation of apparatus and devices for surgical operations; prophylaxis and general stomatologic treatment of inhabitants of Siberia and the Extreme North; ecological problems in the territories of petro-chemical enterprises.

11 recommendations based on the scientific investigations of Academ y's staff members have been included in the arsenal of diagnostics and diseases treatment in Russia and abroad.

Our scientific schools of pediatrians (O.D.Sokolova-Ponomareva, V.P.Bisjarina), surgeons (N.I.Eremejev, L.V.Poluektov, A.N.Kabanov), therapeutists (R.M.Akhrem-Akhremovich, M.A.Vinnikov, N.A.Zhukov), pathology-anatomists (E. S. Novitsky, A.S.Zinovjev) are well known.

For the achievements in scientific investigations and their practical application our teachers have been awarded with the title "Honoured Scientific Worker of Russian Federation" (N. A. Zhukov, A.S.Zinovjev, A.N.Kabanov, N.V.Mishenkin), State Prizes (R.I.Genne, Yu.N.Savchenko) and also with diplomas of the international academies and doctors' associations.

23 departments train post-graduates in different clinical and medico-biological fields to meet the requirements of the Academy and medical institutions. The doctors' and candidates' dissertation papers of 9 medical specialities are defended at 5 specialized qualification degree Boards of the Academy.

The achieved results of the last 10 years' scientific research are the following: 42 contributions at international and all-Russia congresses and conferences; 136 authors' certificates, 12 patents, 27 monographs and teaching guides.

Our library is one of the richest among the medical educational institutions of Russia. It has over 600.000 volumes in it's fund and some of them are quite rare.

The students of the Academy have all the opportunities for studies and recreation. They can be proud of their Alma Mater's reputation and they strive for becoming worthy successors of their teachers in the field of health care.
